All Teachers Need More Professional Development

While reading through the Teach For America Teaching Leadership newsletter, I came across a job listing for Uncommon Schools:

Uncommon Hiring NOW: Teaching and Leading Positions for 2009-2010 at 16 Uncommon Schools
At Uncommon, good teachers become great teachers. Faculty members participate in three weeks of professional development each summer and a half day of professional development each week. Teachers are mentored by their principals, deans, and managing directors, and are frequently observed, guided, and coached to improve their practice…

Wow. Three weeks of professional development every summer and a half day every week. Impressive! And absolutely necessary. It’s not enough to hire great teachers and let them run free like stallions in their classrooms. Even great teachers need to continuously increase their effectiveness.
